Recapping the All Star Game

I was thoroughly upset by the Guardians display, but I'll pu that aside for now.

Team Lidstrom topped Team Staal by a score of 11-10 today. Two members of the Rangers, Marc Staal and Henrik Lundqvist took place in the event today, as well as the skills competition yesterday.

Marc Staal did not succeed to score in the game, had only one shot, and a -2 rating, tied for the team worst with Alex Ovechkin.

Henrik Lundqvist on the other hand, had a good night, despite letting in the final goals for the game. He made a historic save stopping Matt Duchene on a penalty shot after Alex Ovechkin tried to throw his stick in order to disrupt the breakaway. Along with that, for more than half the period, he managed to keep the pucks out of the net before letting in the beauties by Danny Briere, Johnathan Toews, and Marty St. Louis.

Overall, it was a fun weekend, and the Rangers will be back to work against the Penguins this Tuesday!

Rangers in the All Star Game

Team Staal vs. Team Lidstrom.

Brendan Shanahan has done something new to ramp up the All Star Game this year by allowing a draft between the two captains Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes, and Niklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings.

As promised, Eric Staal picked fellow Hurricane goalie Cam Ward first, while Lidstrom took the young and talented Steven Stamkos. Jump to Round 6 of the draft, and you have the first Ranger, Henrik Lundqvist, drafted by Team Staal. Following shortly next round, after an anxious time of waiting to be chosen, Eric Staal stuck to the family tree and took brother Marc Staal. Marc, who told the crowd at the draft "I'm never buying him a Christmas gift again" will be joining his brother on the same team come the 30th, after constant jabbing between the two.

And finally, the final Rangers chosen in the draft was Derek Stepan for the Skills Competition. Stepan was chosen by Team Lidstrom along with Cam Fowler and Taylor Hall.

More news will be brought to you about the All Star Game as it approaches. Keep it here!

NHL Guardian Project

As stated in one of my past posts, the NHL has been keeping this new project involving Stan Lee making comic book styled superheroes out of every team name in the NHL going. Most recently, the twenty third Guardian was revealed to the public, and what a beauty it is.

The Ranger was revealed late last night. As someone who has been voting to finally see this thing, I was extremely happy to see it. Without a doubt, out of all of the Guardians that have been revealed, the Ranger is the best one out of all of them. Sure you can make the attempt to say it is a rip off of Captain America, but that would be a huge stretch. The Guardian description on NHL.com describes the Ranger as the following...

"The Ranger is the vigilant protector of Manhattan.  He never sleeps, and therefore is a regular in Manhattan's late night scene, although you're much more likely to find him in a neighborhood joint than at a trendy nightclub.  His personality is as big as the city he protects, but like most New Yorkers there is humility to his bravado. There's a multi-cultural feel to him that's directly related to the many different nationalities that inhabit the world's most populated island.

As New York City is the nation's largest melting pot, the Ranger is one of the most diverse Guardians in his interests.  He loves meeting people from other parts of the world and loves spending time in other iconic cities across the globe, but it's never long before "the city that never sleeps" calls him back home."

Awesome. When I first saw the silhouette of the Ranger, I got my hopes up, and they were not let down. The only thing from my imagination that I wish was on the Ranger was a long flowing blonde beard. But, you can't have everything you want.

There have been some harsh words about the Guardian Project, some who call it a blatant gimmick and hope they do not go recognized by anyone. I disagree with those views entirely. While yes, there have been some very obvious rip offs of already made superheroes, but its fun for everyone. How can anybody not like the idea of superheroes? Really, people are too uptight about stuff truly, and I'm enjoying this little project no matter how gimicky it may be.

Thats just my views on it. If your interested in seeing what the guardians end up doing (because God knows I have no clue) tune in to the All Star Game on January 30th.

1/25/10 Rangers vs. Panthers

Zucc-zucc-riot!

Rangers against the Florida Panthers.

The Rangers, managed to pull off another stunning win in the shootout yesterday against the Washington Capitals. Wojtek Wolski, Matz Zuccarello, and Artem Anisimov all scored for the Rangers to win by a score of 3-2 (the score I predicted I might add). Despite losing a few players to injuries, the Rangers have done anything but show their weaknesses. The players like Chad Kolarik and others have showed the depth of this Ranger team, and have helped carry the weight put on by all the players sitting with injuries. The Rangers have split 3-0 wins with Florida this season, as they head into their third meeting with the Panthers this season at MSG tonight. However, the only player who scored against the Panthers so far this season that is the most healthy is Derek Stepan. The other goal scorers in Brandon Prust is injured, but not bad enough that he has had to sit out any games, and Ryan Callahan who has been sitting for the past few weeks with a broken hand.

The Panthers have not had the best of luck as of recently, going 3-4-3 in their last 10 games. They're power-play, however, has picked up to an 11.4 percentage, which may not sound like much, but its better than a 9.8%. On the Panthers injury front, they are in the same boat as the Rangers. Chris Higgins, Byron Bitz, Bryan McCabe, and Dimitri Kulikov are all out for the Panthers.

My Diagnosis

Every time I mention the word "momentum", the Rangers ultimately decide to tank in the game I mention it, so I'm going to avoid that word tonight. Wojtek Wolski is hot for the Rangers, and has paid dividends since arriving to the Blueshirts. Expect him to be very noticeable tonight on the ice. However, the Panthers' penalty kill is better than the Rangers', so I'm expecting some special teams struggles tonight. In all, I think the Rangers will pull out another victory tonight at MSG. Henrik Lundqvist sat for the game against Washington last night, and is fresh and ready to go for tonight.

My Predictions

Rangers win 2-1

Wojtek Wolski will get the first goal for the Rangers early in the 1st period.
Stephen Weiss will tie the game half way through the 2nd.
And finally, Mats Zuccarello will get the game winning goal for the Rangers in the 3rd.

Enjoy the game!

1/24/11 Rangers vs. Capitals

And he prays!!!

Rangers against the Washington Capitals.

The last time these two teams met was back in December 12th when the Rangers routed the Caps 7-0. Also, that was in the midst of the 24/7 HBO series filming, so anyone who gets that channel got to relive the magic all over again in all its profane glory. But tonight will be different from the last time these two teams met. The Rangers have only won two of their last five games. Also, in those five games, a nice hand-full of players went down with injuries. The Rangers lost Brandon Dubinsky, Ruslan Fedotenko, and Dan Girardi amongst those games, and have called up players from Connecticut to try and plug the holes. Tonight the Rangers will see the return of Michael Del Zotto, who was sent down to get himself settled from his erratic play earlier this season. Also, Martin Biron will be in net tonight in Washington to rest Henrik Lundqvist for tomorrow nights game at home against Florida.

The Capitals will also have their backup goalie, Braden Hotlby in net tonight. Aside from that, the Caps have been playing well as of late. Alex Ovechkin tallied a hat trick against Toronto in the Capitals' last game, and has been heating up going into the second half of the season. One of the downsides to this Capitals team though is that they've lost eight games in overtime or the shootout, which is the second most in the league. That being said, the Rangers are 4-1 in the shootout. Meaning, if this game tonight goes into extra time, the Caps may be in a bit of trouble.

My Diagnosis

The Rangers are heavily depleted on the injury front, but still have managed to hold on by the skin of their teeth. However, this is a different Capitals team since the last time they versed them. Also, with the loss of some players, the scoring for the Rangers has thinned out. In all, I believe the Rangers will be able to pull this one out, but it will be way more difficult then it was last December.

My Predictions

Rangers win 3-2

Marian Gaborik will get the first goal for the Rangers late in the 1st.
Brian Boyle will get the Rangers' second goal in the 2nd period.
Alex Ovechkin will get one for the Caps also in the 2nd.
John Erskine will get the second goal for the Caps to tie the game in the 3rd.
And finally, Marc Staal will pick up the game winning goal in overtime.

Enjoy the game!

News Around The Rangers

The Jets losing got me in a blogging mood, so, here we go.

I've been kind of neglecting the blog when it comes to content recently. Mostly, I have not done anything except post game predictions and such. Recently I've been trying to get back on that, and heres my attempt to get the ball rolling.

First off, I would like to discuss Mats Zuccarello. Mats was called up in the midst of I believe the Christensen injury if I am not mistaken. Since then, hes proven his worth greatly and is earning his spot in the lineup every night. Its not hard when a good portion of the starting lineup goes down to injuries, but he has shown that he can be a cohesive member of the Rangers line up constantly. He is such a master when it comes to the shootout also. I like that we never really have to see the shootout as much as the Rangers have in past seasons, but with the combination of Zuccarello, Stepan, and Wolski, out shootout line is close to perfection.

While I'm close to the topic of injuries, I'd like to brush up on it. Two players went down last night against Atlanta, those players being Brandon Prust and Dan Girardi. That extends the list to Prust, Girardi, Boogaard, Prospal, Dubinsky, Callahan, and Christensen. These are the perils of playing the grinding style the Rangers have played all season. You cant expect to block shots and make big hits without ramifications somewhere down the line. All we can hope for as fans is for a speedy recovery without any post injury scoring droughts in the midst.

And the final thing I would like to talk about is the NHL Guardian Project. If you haven't heard, Stan Lee has made superheroes out of every team in the NHL, and at the All Star Game on the 30th, they are all going to fight some villain. So far, 23 guardians have been revealed, but neither is "The Ranger". Some of them are cool, some are very obvious rip-offs, and some are just plain horrible. The cool ones include the likes of "The Wild", "The Red Wing", and "The Shark". The obvious rip offs come with "The Oiler" which is clearly Juggernaut from the X-men series, or "The Flame", or "The Penguin" which are closely similar to Cyclops also from the X-Men. then the ones that are horrible, in my opinion, include "The Maple Leaf" which is a tree... I'm not kidding, look it up for yourself. "The Maple Leaf" is a tree. Or "The Coyote" which is basically Wolverine without the claws.

Here is the link in case anyone is interested.

Thats all I have to say today. There will be a pre-game post as always tomorrow against the Capitals. Night!

1/22/11 Rangers vs. Thrashers

Your guess is as good as mine.

Rangers against the Atlanta Thrashers.

Another must win game for the Rangers will take place tonight in Atlanta. Atlanta and New York are separated by 3 points in the Eastern Conference, and both are looking to get a leg up on one another. The Rangers are +21 in the goals for/goals against ratio, while Atlanta is -8. The Rangers, who romped Toronto earlier this week 7-0, got pushed back by Carolina two days ago by the score of 4-1. With the extenuating list of injuries on the team, many rookies have been brought up to fill some gaps. Most recently, Chad Kolarik was called up, and for the most part played well for a rookie in the game against the Hurricanes. However, with this many rookies on the lineup, the scoring is going to start to be a little more scarce.

The Mistfit Blackhaw... excuse me, the Atlanta Thrashers have been up and down this season. With more cohesiveness on this team than ever before, and leadership from Dustin Byfuglien, the Thrashers are making waves in the Eastern Conference. However, they also have some injury problems of their own. Andrew Ladd missed practice due to illness, and Chris Mason and Fredrik Modin are on injured reserve at the moment.

My Diagnosis

The Thrashers beat the Rangers 6-4 earlier this season by a score of 6-4 at the Garden. Martin Biron was in net for the Rangers that time, so I do not expect him to be in net tonight in Atlanta. Also, in the past four times the Rangers have been to Atlanta, they haven't lost in regulation going 2-0-2. In conclusion, I believe the Rangers are going to pull out at least one point tonight. The Rangers, while they are quite depleted, have some weapons left after all the injuries, so in order for them to win, they'll need to show their worth tonight in Atlanta.

My Predictions

Rangers win 2-1

Dustin Byfuglien will get the Thrashers on the board first early in the 1st period.
Derek Stepan will score the first goal for the Rangers in the 2nd period.
Brian Boyle will get the game winning goal also in the 2nd.

Enjoy the game!

1/20/11 Rangers vs. Hurricanes

You make me sick when you speak, Morris.

Rangers against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Wit the Rangers coming off of a huge win last night against Toronto, hopefully the Rangers can keep the momentum going in their favor despite all the injuries piling up. Most recently losing Ruslan Fedotenko to a shoulder injury for 2-3 weeks. Personally, I would like to see the Rangers stop getting hurt, but thats just me. However, when faced with adversity, the Rangers have managed to pull together to pull some points out of nothing, which is a true testament to the teams heart. Last year, Rangers players combined to miss I believe 78 man-games. This year, they're already in the 100s, and it is only half way through the year! However, you can just tell on the bench that this team is trying as hard as they can every night, and is really trying to pull together to get the points.

The Hurricanes are still in the hunt for a playoff position in the Eastern Conference. They are now seven points behind the Rangers, but were slowed down this week thanks to two straight losses to the Bruins. The Hurricanes have beaten the Rangers this season so far, back in October to a score of 4-3. But, in their latest meeting, Mats Zuccarello got his first NHL goal in overtime to win the game for the Rangers 2-1. And now, with the addition of Wojtek Wolski, more secondary scoring can be brought to the table against this team.

My Diagnosis

The Diagnosis is really becoming an actual diagnosis due to all the injuries and all. But anyway, With the momentum of last nights game, and Marian Gaborik gaining his confidence with a four goal game, I believe the Rangers can pull this game out as well. The defense has managed to stick together through the adversity, and is carrying themselves well as of recently.

My Predictions

Rangers win 4-2

Marian Gaborik will continue his scoring run with the games first goal in the 1st.
Eric Staal will pull the Hurricanes even also in the 1st.
Brian Boyle will notch one to pull the Rangers ahead half way through the 2nd.
Marc Stall will get the third for the Rangers also in the 2nd.
Jeff Skinner will pot one for the Hurricanes cutting the deficit to one also in the 2nd.
And finally, Wojtek Wolski will get the empty netter to win the game.

Enjoy the game!

1/19/11 Rangers vs. Maple Leafs

Eddie Shore? Old time hockey?

Rangers against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Rangers are coming into this game on a bit of a slide. The Rangers have dropped their past two games, Marian Gaborik is snake-bitten beyond all belief, and the injuries have been piling up. Most recently, the team announced that forward and team leading scorer Brandon Dubinsky will be sidelined for about 3-4 weeks with a stress fracture in his leg. The Rangers reported that Brandon Dubinsky had been dealing with the pain for a little while, but it just became too much and he had to get it checked. Now, if there were ever a time for Marian Gaborik to come up big, NOW is the time to do it. The team needs leadership right now. The playoff race is getting close. Marian Gaborik NEEDS to score to boost the Rangers. He needs to pull off the big single handed plays he's so good at, and now is the most important time for him to start.

The Maple Leafs are slowly but surely working their way up the Eastern Conference standings, going 5-4-1 in their last ten games. Nikolai Kulemin has three goals and six assists in his last six games, and has improved his play. The Maple Leafs, having beaten the Rangers earlier this season in overtime thanks to Phil Kessel, are a contender tonight, and are more threatening now then they have been in the past.

My Diagnosis

In all, I think the Rangers are able to still win despite the overhaul of injuries around them. However, in order for them to do that, players NEED to convert who have not recently (I'm lookin' at you, Gabby) in order to keep the Rangers in the game. The games are getting too close for comfort, and the goals are not being put up. In order for them to win, the Rangers are going to need to come together as a team and pull out all the stops to get the goals.

My Predictions

Rangers win 2-1

Derek Stepan will get the first goal of the game coming in the 2st period.
Nikolai Kulemin will pot one for the Maple Leafs half way through the 2nd period.
And finally, Brandon Prust will get the game winning goal late in the 3rd period.

Enjoy the game!

Whats Goin' On With the Blueshirts?

Issues have arisen in the Rangers lineup, and not at the most opportune time.

The Rangers are still in playoff contention in the 7th seed now. Slowly approaching though, is the 9th place Carolina Hurricanes whop were stopped dead cold when the Bruins stomped them into a 7-0 loss yesterday (many thanks to them for that). However, in order to avoid the perils of the previous season, the Rangers are going to have to come out of this slump, and fast.

First off, the Rangers power-play is back to its old self. they have a 15.6 power-play percentage, ranked 22nd in the league so far. Obviously, losing Ryan Callahan could be a big catalyst in why this is happening, but the Rangers need to find a way to improve their depth and pull out some goals in an odd-man situation.

Secondly, the drought of scoring by players who are notoriously good at it: mostly Marian Gaborik. I will not trash Gaborik for his play, because I would rather have him then be without him, but he needs to produce. The Rangers are in too much of a slide for him to be riding the mediocrity train. The goals are there, but the Rangers need his expertise to provide that extra jump in their offensive firepower now and then.

In all, the Rangers need to pull it together quickly, otherwise the trials to get to the playoffs can be perilous if they do not pick their play up.

1/16/11 Rangers vs. Flyers

For those New Yorkers who don't want to watch the Jets get crushed.

Rangers against the Philadelphia Flyers.

My animosity for Philly has died down recently, with the Eagles and their criminal quarterback getting booted from the NFL playoffs, but tonight, it could be revived once again.

The Rangers have had troubles with the Flyers all season, losing both games prior to  score of 4-1. The Rangers have remained in the hunt though, still hanging onto the 6th place spot despite all the injuries of their grinding style piling up. The Rangers still have a better power-play than the Flyers, and also lead the league in short handed goals with nine. The Rangers can be dangerous on the special teams, and when given an opportunity, it will take a lot to make them miss.

The Flyers lead the Eastern Conference with 61 points. Danny Briere, Ville Leino, and Scott Hartnell hae bonded together to form an impeccable line for the Flyers. Also, both times that the Flyers have versed the Rangers this season, Nikolai Zherdev has scored. If the Rangers still want a shot at winning tonight, they will have to shut him down.

My Diagnosis

With the way both teams are coming into this game on losses, there is no real momentum in swing for either team. Although, I feel the Rangers are going to have to be damn near perfect if they want to beat the Flyers. that means capitalizing on the opportunities that present themselves as much as possible, which is something I have seen them struggle with as of lately. In all, it is going to be a tough game, but I have to give it to the Flyers tonight.

My Predictions

Flyers win 3-2

Danny Briere will get the Flyers on the board early in the 1st period.
Jeff Carter will also score in the 1st.
Brandon Dubinsky will score early n the 2nd for the first goal for the Rangers.
Nikolai Zherdev will score the finall goal for the Flyers in the 3rd period.
And finally, Marian Gaborik will pot one to give the Rangers two.

Enjoy the game!

1/15/11 Rangers vs. Canadiens

Hello, again.

Rangers against the Montreal Canadiens.

Dosen't it seem like we just did this? This will be the second meeting between these two teams this week, the Canadiens winning earlier this week by a score of 2-1. The Rangers looked sluggish, according to John Tortorella in the post game press conference. Watching the first game, he is quite right. The passes weren't clean, mostly hopping over the players sticks when getting to them, and the neutral zone was not taken control of. Those are two factors the Rangers are going to need to take from the previous game against the Canadiens and apply them tonight if they want to win. On the injury front, its still Frolov, Prospal, Callahan, Christensen, and Boogaard out for the Rangers. Lundqvist however, has kept the Rangers hanging around in the standings, going 5-1-1 in his last seven starts, and has not allowed more than two goals on any of those occasions.

The Habs rolled into the Garden earlier this week and put a victory up against the Rangers. Now, its their turn to defend their home turf. The Canadiens have an awesome home record of 14-6-3, and are 5-4-1 in their last ten games. A sickness has been going through the Canadiens locker room, most recently infecting Mike Cammalleri and Max Pacioretty, who are game time decisions. Along with them, Andrei Markov and Josh Gorges are also out for tonights game.

My Diagnosis

I have a good feeling in my gut that the game tonight will be won in overtime. I feel that both teams are equally matched defensively, and thats the way it will be. I am not sure if Auld will be in net for the Habs, but after an alright performance this week, I don't see why the Habs wouldn't put him back in. However, when it comes down to overtime, it could go either way between these teams.

My Predictions

Mathieu Darche will open the scoring for the Canadiens, the only goal of the 1st period.
The Rangers will get on the board in the 2nd, coming off of Artem Anisimov's stick.
Marc Staal will pull the Rangers ahead 2-1 also in the 2nd.
And finally, Benoit Pouliot will tie the game up half way through the 3rd period.

In overtime, its hard to call. Although I'm getting a feeling that Wojtek Wolski will pay another dividend that Rozsival was hardly ever able to pay by scoring the overtime winner early in OT.

Enjoy the game!

Recapping the Rangers/Canucks

Last night, I had the privilege of viewing another Henrik Lundqvist shutout on Garden ice against the league best Vancouver Canucks.

While I missed the first eight minutes or so because the restaurant we were eating at took way too damn long, I was able to see the rest of the action from then on. The atmosphere at the Garden was incredible. You can just feel the intensity from every near goal, and there were a few that got everyone excited.

Wolskis goal was also incredible. Being there and knowing you saw his first goal as a Ranger leaves a permanent memory in my head. Its just special to me, knowing that if he becomes a major part of this Rangers lineup, I was there for the very first goal.

A few other wacky things that happened during the game sparked my interest as well. I forget what period it started, but someone began the chant of "U-S-A, U-S-A" in the Garden. At first I was very confused, because this wasn't a national game. So I figured it must have been because Roberto Luongo, the goalie for the Canucks, was on the Canadian team in the Olympics last year. So maybe there was some left over animosity from that... only Roberto Luongo was not in net last night; Cory Schneider was. I'm still baffled.

Also, the co-highlight of the closing seconds of the game, other than winning the game, was a Canucks green-man started running around the concourse of the Garden. If you are unaware of the Canucks green-men, they are two fans who wear the full green body suits from the character "Green Man" on Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia to Canucks games, and taunt opposing players in the penalty box. Now, I'm not sure if that was really one of the gentlemen from Vancouver, but I found it to be quite hysterical.

That's all for today people. Tomorrow is redemption on the country of Canada.

1/13/11 Rangers vs. Canucks

Howdy y'all.

Unfortunately I cannot write my entire analysis of tonights game, because I am going to it and actually leaving quite soon, so I'll just give you my predictions.

Tonights game will end in either the overtime or in the shootout at the final score of 3-2.
Brandon Dubinsky will score the Rangers' first goal in the 1st period.
Daniel Sedin will get the first goal for the Canucks also in the 1st.
Ryan Kesler will get the Canucks their second goal late in the 2nd.
And Brian Boyle will tie things half way through the 3rd period.

I apologize for the briefness of my post today, and I promise to give you a full and complete post next game.

1/11/11 Rangers vs. Canadiens

I lift things up and put them down.

Rangers against the Montreal Canadiens.

Tonights game will mark the start of a four game series between these two teams. The Rangers and Canadiens are separated by four points in the Eastern conference, separated by Atlanta who sits at seventh place.

The Rangers are riding a three game in streak into the Garden tonight. The Rangers have had quite a bit of trouble with injuries lately, most recently losing Alex Frolov for the season. But, faster than anyone anticipated, Glen Sather made a move that sent veteran defenseman Michal Rozsival to Phoenix in exchange for left winger Wojtek Wolski. It is possible that Wolski can make his debut tonight, but not confirmation has been released. Regardless, the Rangers have been doing all that it takes to win their past few games and are riding some good momentum. Brandon Dubinsky has two goals and seven assists in his last eight games, and Henrik Lundqvist has gotten a chance to rest and prepare for tonights game after sitting out in St. Louis and letting Martin Biron take the reigns or a night.

The Canadiens look to extend their win streak to three games tonight, and gain some ground on the ever approaching Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern conference standings. The Canadiens have had a very good powerplay as of lately, going on 5 of their last 15 attempts. The Canadiens also have plenty of players over the 10 goal mark in Brian Gionta, Tomas Plekanec, Andrei Kostitsyn, and Mike Cammalleri. Although, Mike Cammalleri will not be seeing ice time tonight for he is out with an undisclosed ailment. However, it is fairly evident that the Canadiens prefer playing in their home arena rather than away. The Canadiens' home record is 14-5-3, while their home record is 9-11-0. That may not be a big deal, considering its only two games difference, but it could be a factor in their play tonight.

My Diagnosis

This is yet another close call to make. The Rangers and Canadiens are fairly matched teams, and both are looking to stay in the hunt for the playoffs. In all, I think it will come down to goaltending tonight. I believe a lot of shots are going to be taken in this game, and Henrik Lundqvist and Carey Price (assuming he dosen't B-Boy himself too hard) are going to have to be sharp in order to keep their clubs in the game.

My Predictions

Rangers win 20-1

Ha, just kidding Marius.

Rangers win 3-2.

Brian Gionta will score the opening goal for the Canadiens early in the first.
Brandon Dubinsky will get the first goal for the Rangers also in the first.
Derek Stepan will get the second goal for the Rangers coming half way through the 2nd period.
The final goal for the Rangers will be scored by Ruslan Fedotenko also in the 2nd.
And finally, Tomas Plekanec will get the final goal for the Canadiens, the only goal of the 3rd period.

Auf Weidersehen y'all!

Rangers Trade Rozsival for Wojtek Wolski

Just a matter of hours after finding out Alex Frolov was out for the season, the Rangers have made a move to fill the gap, and move closer to the future.

The Rangers and Phoenix Coyotes have completed a trade for left-winger Wojtek Wolski, in exchange for long term defenseman Michal Rozsival. Rozsival, who had jumped his game slightly this year with 3 goals and 12 assists, was dealt to make room in the cap hit, and also to plug some of the holes that have appeared on the offensive front due to injuries.

Wolski has 6 goals and 10 assists on the Coyotes so far this season. Last season, he split his time with the Avalanche and Coyotes after being dealt to Phoenix at the trade deadline last year. After being dealt, he had an even amount of points in relation to how many games he played in Phoenix at 18. He also got 4 goals and an assist in the playoff series against the Red Wings in last years playoffs.

Wolski also has marvelous skills when it comes to the shootout. The Rangers are 3-1 in the shootout so far, and with Stepan and Zuccarello able to hold their own in the skills competition, the order with Wolski in it just sounds like an absolute powerhouse.

Hopefully, Wolski is able to still hold his own on the offensive side of the puck, and can provide some more assists and goals to this Rangers lineup. I commend Glen Sather on his work making moves that look toward the future for this team.

Alex Frolov Out For The Season

A bit of breaking news on the injury front for the Rangers once again, this time more serious than the rest.

Alex Frolov has suffered a torn ACL in his right knee, and is possibly done for the season.

Frolov suffered the injury during the game against St. Louis on Saturday.

While this is a horrible injury that I would not wish on anyone, it may have an underlying golden lining. Frolov had a one year contract with the Rangers, and it seemed earlier on in the season that he would not be returning. Frolov managed to tally seven goal and nine assists for a total of 16 points for the Rangers. While that is substantial, it was not enough for the Rangers.

The Rangers signed Frolov to try and help the scoring depth of the team. While in the meantime, hes been surpassed by Brandon Dubinsky, Brian Boyle, and Marian Gaborik who missed a quarter of the first half of the season.

It has become apparent that Frolov is not a part of the Rangers' future. Now, this give the Rangers some room for the cap hit, as well as a lineup spot for Mats Zuccarello, who has played outstanding for the Rangers so far.

I wish Alex a speedy and full recovery, and wish him luck with signing another contract later in his career.

Rebounding

The Rangers have done an excellent job of rebounding from dropping the first two games of the new year to Tampa Bay and Florida.

Most teams have eclipsed the half way mark of their schedule this year so far, including the Rangers. The Rangers currently sit at the 6th place standing in the Eastern Conference, and have a three point lead on 7th seeded Atlanta. The Rangers are 8th in the league in the goals for percentage, and 9th in the goals allowed.

The Rangers have the seventh best shootout record at three wins and one loss. They also have the best road record in the league at 15-7-1.

With stats like these, this team is molding into a force that should be reckoned with in the near future. Sure, they have not built up any staggering winning streaks this season, but what they havent done is built up practically any losing streaks either. The longest losing streak the Rangers have had all season was back in October in the second, third, and fourth game of the season. Since then, the bonding and teamwork has been oh so evident and it makes me proud as a fan to see this team working as hard as they are.

Just wanted to make a quick note about how I feel about the team. I look forward to watching them down the stretch, and beyond.

1/8/11 Rangers vs. Blues

Zucc-da-whoop

Rangers against the St. Louis Blues.

The Blues have taken the first of two games between these two clubs, the first being a 2-0 shutout on November 7th of last year. Both Blues goals were scored by Alexander Steen, who has accumulated 14 goals this season so far.

Marty Biron was in net the last time these two teams met, so I do not expect him to be back their tonight. On the injury front for the Rangers, Brandon Prust has joined the pile with a day-to-day shoulder injury. So now the list of inactive players are Prust, Rozsival, Callahan, Christensen, Prospal, and Boogaard. While Prospal has not played all year, and Boogaard is mostly just utilized for his fists, thats quite a few holes to fill. Prust played the penalty-kill, and leads the league in short-handed points. Luckily, Mats Zuccarello has been showing his skill early, and is earning himself a spot here on the Rangers lineup every game. While it does trouble me that the Rangers have had to go to OT in their last 3 games when games should be won in regulation, its nice to have a player who is competent when it comes to sudden death.

The Blues are currently sitting at 9th in the Western Conference. A win tonight could bump them up to 5th place, considering everyone else in the division loses. The Blues are -4 in the goals for/goals against ratio, but have managed to stay in the running. The Blues also have a few injuries to important layers as well. T.J. Oshie is close to returning, but not tonight. Along with him, Andy MacDonald and David Perron both have concussions, and Dave Scatchard is suffering from a lower body injury. Basically, the Blues are in the same boat as the Rangers when it comes to injuries.

My Diagnosis

The Rangers and Blues are another close match-up. Both teams have powerful offensive weapons, but have been bitten by the injury bug lately. Another tough call to make tonight, but I feel that the Rangers can come out on top tonight. They have found an even flow amongst all their players, and continue to surprise me. I like the way some of the newcomers have shown their worth, how the sophomores have come up big, and how the veterans have continued to play to their use. Also, tonight I believe Marian Gaborik will break out of his scoring drought. Its been far too long since hes gotten a goal, and I think tonight is the night he finally pots one.

My Predictions

Rangers win 2-1

Dan Girardi will get the first goal for the Rangers in the 2nd period.
David Backes will pull the two teams even in the 3rd period.
And finally, Marian Gaborik will get the game winning goal half way through the 3rd.

Enjoy the game!

1/7/11 Rangers vs. Stars

If I get snowed in one more freaking time...

Rangers against the Dallas Stars.

The Rangers are coming off a hard fought victory against the Carolina Hurricanes, won 2-1 in overtime by Mats Zuccarello. It was very joyous for me to see this kid finally come up big for this team because I truly believe he will be good given time to grow. Not many players can say they lead the Olympics in goals and did not play in a single medal game... while also standing 5'7.

The Rangers have yet another injury to throw onto their pile of inactive players that just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Michal Rozsival apparently suffered a right rib injury against the Hurricanes and is currently listed as day-to-day. While he may not be the subject of much praise on this team (especially coming from a man I know named Blake), he is after all, an important player for this team. He is the most experienced defenseman on the team, and has recently been putting up number well out of his expected norm, most recently getting the game-winning goal against the Devils on the 29th of December. Say what you want about his skill, an injury is an injury, and the team may slow down because of it.

The Stars have been putting on a rampage of a season so far, racking up 52 points, and sitting at 3rd place in the Western Conference. Mike Ribiero and Brendan Morrow have put up a collective 74 points, and do not show any signs of slowing down. Along with that, the goaltending of Kari Lehtonen and Andrew Raycroft have kept the team afloat. The last time the Stars met the Rangers was a year and a day ago at Madison Square Garden, when the Rangers pounced on the Stars and won 5-2. It may not be as easy this time because the Stars have found some rhythm among the players.

My Diagnosis

Expect another hard fought game from the Rangers and Stars yet again. With the standings in both conferences being so close, both teams must consider this a must-win game. However, with the Rangers suffering from multiple injuries and having to sit a lot of players, the goal of winning is becoming much harder. Marian Gaborik has been streaky this season, and the production of goals from secondary scoring players has slowed. So tonight, I feel the game will go in the Stars' favor because they are ore healthy, and threrfore more equipped when it comes to scoring.

My Predictions

Stars win 3-2

Mike Ribiero will get the games opening goal for the Stars early in the 1st period.
Derek Stepan will tie the game up at 1-1 late in the 1st.
Loui Eriksson will pull the Stars ahead in the 2nd period.
Brandon Dubinsky will pull the teams even again early in the 3rd period.
Finally, Brendan Morrow will win the game for the Stars half way through the 3rd.

Edit: I forgot to mention this is Sean Avery's first return to Dallas since the whole "sloppy-seconds" incident. Expect booing, and plenty of it.

Enjoy the game!

1/5/11 Rangers vs. Hurricanes

Clayton Stoner said he'd love to stay and chat in New Jersey, but he has to bounce.

Rangers against the Carolina Hurricanes.

This is the second meeting out of four between these two teams this season. The Rangers are coming into this one on a two game losing streak, most recently dropping a 3-0 shutout to the Panthers. Likely by now, John Tortorella has given the team an earful on their play as of recently. Coach Tortorella needs to boost morale on the team in order to avoid another disappointing season when the Rangers decide to give up half way through the season. The Rangers have thinned out in the scoring department as of recently, but still remain a constant threat. Marian Gaborik, who also has struggled, has 14 points over his last 12 games against Carolina, so expect him to be tightly covered most of the game. Without Ryan Callahan and Erik Christensen, the Rangers are going to have to dig into their bag of tricks and try to find ways to weather the storm until their return.

The Hurricanes are riding a three game winning streak coming into this game. If they win tonight, they will be within 4 points of the Rangers in the top 8 in the Eastern Conference. The Rangers need to treat this game as a must win. Their cushion that they have built up so far is dwindling down, and unless a turnaround comes soon, we could see another struggle for a playoff spot yet again.

The Hurricanes are without Jussi Jokinen and Joni Pitkanen tonight, which could be a hole in the Hurricanes game that the Rangers can exploit. Jokinen and Pitkanen are key parts in the Hurricanes game with 38 assists combined between the two. The lack of play-makers may slow down the Hurricanes offense, but the Rangers are going to have to convert in order to get the jump on this Canes team.

My Diagnosis

This is going to be a fairly even game. The last bout between these two teams ended in a 4-3 win for the Hurricanes, so expect something along those lines, just not as much scoring as last time. With injuries to both teams' play-makers, it is very hard to call this one. I expect this game to be decided in either overtime, or the shootout. But, as for the winner, I honestly cannot bring myself to pick either team. Either way it should be an exciting game, and all should tune in to watch it.

Enjoy the game

Not A Good Start To The New Year

I'm writing this out of disgruntlement with the sport world. The Giants are out of the playoffs, USA is out of the World Juniors tournament, and the Rangers got shut out by the Panthers two days ago. Not a very good start to the New Year.

The only reason I could fathom why the Rangers got shut out on Sunday was because of the pile up of injuries coming to this team. Ruslan Fedotenko was the latest to get tagged, blocking a shot with his hand a-la Ryan Callahan. Fortunately, its only a bad bruise, and not a break. However, The Rangers are down Ryan Callahan, Erik Christensen, and Vinny Prospal, who may not even be coming back this season due to complication with healing.

The injuries can be the downfall of any team down the stretch. It's who steps up and fills that roll that makes injuries the scariest thing in sports.

I will admit, when Gaborik and Drury went down earlier this season, I thought this team was dead in the water. But, I was mistaken, for players like Brian Boyle, Derek Stepan, and Brandon Dubinsky stepped up to fill the void and give the Rangers the power to win without Gaborik.

And just like that, I was relieved. I had begged for secondary scoring to come to the Rangers ever since Jagrs last year as a Ranger, and it finally arrived. But, without good play-makers in Callahan and Christensen, the secondary scoring has thinned out.

This was just a quick vent on the situation of the Rangers, and my assessment of their recent play.

While this blog is really just something I do for fun, it would be nice to get an active audience involved. I don't mind if your an opposing fan who wishes to voice their opinion, leave a comment if you wish. That'll be all, folks.

1/2/11 Rangers vs. Panthers

Dave Steckel called Sidney Crosby after the Winter Classic to tell him to keep his chin up.

Rangers against the Florida Panthers.

The last time these two teams met, the Rangers blindsided the Panthers 3-0. But that was back when Erik Christensen, Ryan Callahan, and Michael Del Zotto were all healthy. The Rangers have taken some harsh injuries over the past few weeks, and its evident.

Last night, the Rangers fell to Tampa Bay in overtime 2-1. The only Rangers goal came with 45 seconds left in regulation by Marian Gaborik, who has been struggling to get the points. I was not able to see the game last night, so I cannot fairly judge how they played. However, I meant it when I said that Tampa Bay is a force to reckoned with this year, and I knew they would exploit the Rangers flaws right from the get-go. However, despite quite a few injuries to key players, the Rangers are still managing to produce goals. While the defense is young, the offense has been doing its share to keep the Rangers in games, along with Lundqvist who has been playing like his old self recently.

The Panthers also lost in overtime on Friday, after giving up a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to Montreal. They have gotten some key players back from injuries recently, but not much has changed on the forefront. While they have improved to +3 in the goals for/goals against ratio, their power-play rating is still a league worst 8.9 success rate. Most recently, they have placed Steven Reinprecht on waivers to make room for the injured player returning to the lineup. But on a good note for the Panthers, Stephen Weiss has three goals in his last four games. The Panthers have found a way of putting the puck in the net as of recently, so I do not expect another shutout of this team to happen tonight.

My Diagnosis

While the Panthers have been putting up the points, I don't believe they will come out on top tonight. The Rangers have more offensive weapons than the Panthers do, and overall seem they can outwork the Panthers. If the Panthers do get into playing a special teams game, that will also be one of their downfalls. While their power-play isn't stellar by any means, and the Rangers lead the league in short-handed points, it would be a tough road for the Panthers if they try to take it.

My Predictions

Rangers win 2-1

Derek Stepan will get the Rangers on the board first in the 2nd period.
Stephen Weiss will pull the game even at 1-1 late in the 2nd.
And finally, the game will be capped off for the Rangers in the 3rd period by Brian Boyle.

Enjoy the game!

1/1/11 Rangers vs. Lightning

For those people not watching the Winter Classic.

Rangers against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

This New Years Day game will mark the third time these two teams will face each other this season. The Lightning have taken the first two games, most recently a 4-3 shootout win that went nearly eleven rounds. Both times the Rangers have played the Lightning, they have been serrated when it comes to poor decision making. Twice in the last game, the Rangers turned it over to a wide open Martin St. Louis who created scoring chances on both opportunities, and scoring on one of them. If I was coach of the Rangers tonight, I would send Biron out on the ice tonight. Send the Lightning a curve-ball in net, so they have to adjust their style of play to Biron. The Lightning have figured out Lundqvist twice this season, and the Rangers need to come up with a new strategy. Biron is 10-7-2 in his career against the Lightning, and while thats slightly above average, Biron seems like he could hold his own tonight.

My Diagnosis

With the Rangers having played the Bolts twice this season and lost twice, tonight I feel the order will continue  with the Rangers dropping this one. The Lightning have a very good lineup this year. While they are still -2 in the goals for/goals against ratio, they put up the goals necessary for them to win. That stat is skewed because of the do-si-do that keeps happening between Dan Ellis and Mike Smith in goal. Make no mistake, the Lightning are a good team, and unfortunately, I predict them to follow the same path the past two times they've played the Rangers.

My Predictions

Lightning win 4-2

Steven Stamkos will get the first goal for the Bolts in the 1st period.
Vincent Lecavalier will also get a Lightning goal in the 1st.
Brian Boyle will get the Rangers on the board early in the 2nd period.
Alex Frolov will bring the Rangers even also in the 2nd.
Steven Stamkos will get his second goal of the night half way through the 3rd period.
And finally, Teddy Purcell will get the empty net goal to win the game for the Bolts.

Enjoy your New Years everyone!
